Remedy Entertainment has revealed that AWE, its second expansion for Control, marks the first concrete step in its quest to create a connected universe, in which its various games IPs will intersect with each other.
Remedy has revealed in a blogpost that AWE, due to be released on August 27 on Xbox One, PS4 and PC, will focus on Altered World Events – bizarre, alternate-dimension occurrences – one of which will be the shenanigans that took place in the developer’s 2010 game Alan Wake. Remedy says that the titular protagonist will make an appearance in that DLC.
In another blogpost, Remedy’s Creative Director Sam Lake has revealed that this marks the first instance of his vision to create a Remedy Connected Universe. Lake said: “By now, you have maybe seen the trailer for AWE, our next expansion for Control. For over 10 years, we’ve had a crazy dream. The idea that the tales told in some of our games would be connected to each other, a connected world of stories and events with shared characters and lore. Each game is a stand-alone experience, but each game is also a doorway into a larger universe with exciting opportunities for crossover events.
“I’m absolutely thrilled to tell you that now, the time has come to take the first concrete step on this road, establishing Remedy Connected Universe. What took place in 2010 in Alan Wake is one of the cases that the Federal Bureau of Control has been investigating. The AWE expansion is the first official Remedy Connected Universe crossover event, bringing more Alan Wake lore into Control. And this is still just a humble beginning. We’re already hard at work on a future Remedy game that also takes place in this same universe.”
Whether that game will be Control 2, the much-anticipated Alan Wake 2 (Remedy released a franchise spin-off game entitled Alan Wake’s American Nightmare in 2012) or some sort of crossover between the two remains to be seen. But fans of Remedy’s games will be pleased to discover that the developer is working on an officially unannounced project.
Control’s convoluted, madcap but clever premise of a government bureau investigating paranormal phenomena suddenly makes much more sense in the light of Lake’s desire to create an ambitious connected universe for Remedy’s games. We’ll be=ring you more news about that whenever it emerges.
