Sony has announced that the PlayStation 5 will launch on 19 November in the UK, with a price-tag of £449.99 (GBP) for the standard version and £359.99 for the diskless Digital Edition.
That means the full-fat PlayStation 5 will cost the same as the fully specified Xbox Series X, although Microsoft’s digital-only version of its console, the Xbox Series S, will, at £249.99, undercut the PS5 Digital Edition by £110. Sony’s next-gen consoles will also arrive nine days after Microsoft’s – although we mere Europeans will have to wait until a week after the PS5 launches on November 12 in the US, Japan, Canada, Mexico, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand.
In a digital event announcing the PS5’s pricing and availability, Sony also revealed that Final Fantasy XVI, Hogwarts Legacy, a new (as yet unnamed) God of War game and Five Nights at Freddy’s Security Breach will be coming to the PS5 post-launch.
Launch titles for the console will include Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, the remastered Demon’s Souls, Sackboy: A Big Adventure and Destruction AllStars. Sony confirmed that many of the PS5’s games will come with a Recommended Retail Price of £69.99, which is what Xbox Series X and Series S games are also expected to cost.
PlayStation Plus subscribers will be rewarded for upgrading to the PS5 with what Sony has dubbed the PlayStation Plus Collection, which it described as: “A curated lineup of PS4 games that defined the generation, which will be available to PS Plus members to download and play on PS5. The PS Plus Collection features critically acclaimed games, including Batman Arkham Knight, Bloodborne, Fallout 4, God of War, Monster Hunter: World, Persona 5 and many more.”
Jim Ryan, president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, said: “Since we first announced our next generation console last year, we have received astounding support from developers and gaming fans all around the world, and it’s truly humbling. Now we are just a couple of months away from launching PS5, which will offer a new generation of experiences that go beyond players’ expectations of how games can look, feel, sound, and play. We can’t wait for our fans to experience for themselves the incredible speed, the heightened immersion and the breathtaking games on PS5 when we launch this November.”
