Where did it all start?

by Lee Abrahams

We all remember the halcyon days of our youth, when pixelated sprites would flash across black backdrops in a few frames of animated glory, doing our bidding via primitive keyboards and joysticks with just the ONE  button on them.

It seems a far flung experience when compared with todays hi-tech offerings, with players able to use ten plus button pads, Virtual Reality, motion controls, touch screens and seeing 1080p images rendered at 60 fps. Imagine showing the latest Forza game to your younger self at the start of the 80’s? Your younger self would die of shock. RIP you. Died seeing games that were too awesome and ahead of their time. Buried clutching your Spectrum 48k and tape deck.

Still it does us good to look back and remember those glory days, when games that two guys made on a computer in a week could be just as enjoyable as anything put together by teams of hundreds over the course of two years in the here and now. I mean it’s clearly not true, but you just have to believe.

Let’s do this choose your own adventure style (only with far less pages) and have you pick out a set era in gaming and then I can tell you the absolute best gaming system available at the time as well as some of the titles that you thought were absolute bangers
